March 6, 2009 - Notes from Shinan Govani
Issue #27

We adore good press - and who doesn't?   We were delighted to see that Shinan Govani from the National Post talked about our new store.   He says it much better than we ever could:

It’s the next notch in Yorkville’s belt — and it’s happening, recession or no recession.

“We’re on track,” says Shawn Gibson about the newer, bigger and oh-so much prettier digs that Teatro Verde is about to get. Gibson is the co-founder of the shop where Toronto Joneses have long gone to keep up; the place you head to pick up your state-of-the-art spice racks and your non-Marxist lampshades, your ch’i-centring candles and your Judi Dench-worthy soap dispensers, your Kate Spades and your Nigella Lawsons and your over-the-top floral arrangements.

The deluxe gift shop, in Hazelton Lane since 1997, is moving to a 10,000-square-foot shop at 100 Yorkville and, naturally, there’s an opening — and party! — in sight. Style junkies, I hear, should circle May 14 on the calendar.

That’s when, I also hear, a whole slew of top names in design are expected to land in springtime Toronto. Consider: India Hicks, the greatest tastemaker to emerge from Britain’s Royal Family, who these days can be seen hosting TV’s Top Design. Consider, also: Carson Kressley, the gay gussy up-er. Other confirmed guests? Haute book publishers Prosper and Martine Assouline, as well as Donna Hay, the cookbook author who they like to call “Australia’s Martha Stewart.”

Might America’s Martha Stewart — a.k.a. Martha Stewart — also make it? Maybe. The domestic diva often visits Teatro Verde when she’s in town, so it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility. By the way, speaking of boldface browsers, the Hazelton Lane locale has had at least two quite well-known people in quite recently. Not only Julianne Moore but also that ingenue Amanda Seyfried, of Mean Girls/Big Love/Mamma Mia! fame!

Scene! drenched!

-Sarah Polley kept up her director-actress strength by enjoying healthy eats at Fresh on Queen last week.
-“I will miss your umbrella, and how you hold it, every time it rains.” That was a wistful Eugene Levy the other day, serenading forever-and-ever CFTO weatherman Dave Devall, as he preps for retirement in April.

three more things:

1. Rachel Bilson’s rumoured engagement to Canada’s Hayden Christensen? It all seems less rumour-y, now that paps have caught the Hollywood sweetie showing off what appeared to be an engagement ring while on a L.A. shopping run.

2. Don’t kid yourself about the recent news that William Shatner turned down a fan’s suggestion that he become Canada’s governor-general because, as he snarked, he’s angling become prime minister instead. At least one political party in this country has, on more than occasion, I hear, reached out to Captain Kirk, asking him to run for office!

3. Rick Mercer went bowling recently with that ruling octogenarian, Mayor Hazel McCallion. Mississauga’s Centre Bowl was where the two cats got jiggy with it.
